Researchers at the University of California, Riverside (UC Riverside) have developed a type of pneumatic computer memory that helps a soft robot play the piano.

Instead of relying on conventional transistors, this air-based memory relies on microfluid valves that control airflow. This memory may not be very powerful, but it is good enough to help a pair of soft robotic hands play music at a slow but steady pace. The absence of positive pressure ensures this and there is no risk of memory explosion during use.

This technology is not yet ready for daily use. In addition to the advanced improvements in complexity and speed, the robot needs software versions of processors and other components. Despite this, the goal is clear. Pneumatic memory may be able to reduce the need for chips in soft robots and indicate the future of fully flexible robots that will not be damaged in the event of a collision.
